Decommissioning Plug & Abandonment

During Plug and Abandonment (P&A) operations and other well intervention procedures, the gate valves on the xmas tree are classed as ‘well barriers’, and are critical as part of the 2 barrier safety policy necessary to commence a well intervention.

Decommissioning sealing requirements

During Plug and Abandonment (P&A) operations and other well intervention procedures, the gate valves on the xmas tree are classed as ‘well barriers’, and are critical as part of the 2 barrier safety policy necessary to commence a well intervention.

Gaining an integral seal on a wellhead or xmas tree gate valve is a documented problem, particularly on older valves, due to wear and tear, seal face damage during service, or because of a limited or ineffective preventative maintenance program.

At the point of pressure testing the tree valves prior to rig up for the well entry / well intervention process, the valve not being able to seal full closed in tubing pressure, with zero leak rate, can cause delays to the job, whilst attempts are made to inject a sealant compound into the valve, in order to assist in gaining an integral isolation.

Valve Sealant 701 and the corresponding Pump System is a valuable tool kit to have on site for all P&A jobs.

Valve Sealant 701

The Valve Sealant 701 range was designed to further expand on the sealing performance that had been achieved with Valve Lubricant 601TM. Our non-hardening sealants provide temporary emergency repair to damaged valves so that operations can continue until replacement can be scheduled.

Pump Equipment

RS Clare, in conjunction with partners, has developed a streamlined range of high pressure pump equipment suited to handling our heavy duty valve lubricants and sealants. Often, after such products are selected, what can impede or stop the job is not having a pump system with sufficient capability to inject these products into the valve.

Valve lubricants for carbon capture and storage operations

RS Clare teamed up with Schlumberger and a prominent IOC (International Oil Company) to conduct a detailed analysis on Valve Lubricant 601TM and how it behaves when mixed with Supercritical CO2.
An intricate array of red valves and pipes, including an Xmas tree wing valve, on a metal structure is part of an oil or natural gas drilling rig set against a cloudy sky. The equipment includes gauges and connectors surrounded by a safety railing, with a grassy field in the background.
