WORLD LEADERS IN WIRE ROPE PROTECTION

WIRE ROPE LUBRICANTS

EXPERTS IN WIRE ROPE BUILD AND DRESSING LUBRICANTS

The ClareGuard wire rope range of lubricants has been developed with full rope protection in mind. The range comprises of several build (primary) and stranding products that provide a high level of extended protection from the first day of manufacture, through storage and use, giving your rope the best opportunity for long life. The range also reduces the need for replacement and extends service intervals. When servicing is required, our fully compatible dressing (secondary) lubricants are there to boost protection and prolong your rope life even further. While our non-hazardous, non-toxic, VGP (Vessel General Permit) compliant lubricants mean no need to compromise performance for operator safety or use in environmentally sensitive locations.

What Daily Checks Should Be Performed On A Crane Wire Rope?

Where failure isn’t an option. In this blog post, we discuss the dangers of not maintaining wire ropes, the essential daily checks to be performed, and best practices for maintaining a safe and reliable wire rope.

Build (primary) Lubricants

Wire rope is composed of individual wires twisted together and arranged in a helical pattern around a central core. The rope flexibility and strength is determined by material quality and selection, wire size and twist pattern. For example, strands made of larger-diameter wires tend to be more resistant to abrasion, while strands made of smaller-diameter wires are more flexible and easier to manoeuvre. The inherent build and use of wire ropes leave them susceptible to both internal and external abrasion while environmental factors can hasten a failure mode. The introduction of a high-functioning build lubricant can prolong rope life, protecting the rope from damage by shock loads, fretting fatigue, and external abrasion while providing an effective barrier to prevent contaminants and corrosive elements from causing harm to the rope. The ClareGuard Build Lubricant range is specifically formulated to facilitate multiple application methods while providing protection long after the build process. It also incorporates non-hazardous, environmentally friendly formulas for varying end-user requirements.

Dressing (secondary) Lubricants

Wire ropes are widely used across many sectors, exposed to multiple external factors, and varying environmental conditions. While the use of a high-functioning build (primary) lubricant will maximise your rope life, from time-to-time this level of protection needs to be replenished. A suitable rope inspection and maintenance plan should be established to prolong rope life and avoid catastrophic failure while understanding that most rope damage will occur from within. The ClareGuard dressing range is designed to offer multiple application methods for every eventuality and protect across a wide range of conditions. The high-functioning formulations offer the best level of protection while ensuring the lubricant remains in place within the rope.

THE VESSEL GENERAL PERMIT REGULATION (VGP)

The Vessel General Permit Regulation 2013 mandates the use of an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL) for many applications, primarily where discharge to or contact with seawater is likely. The EPA defines an EAL as not being sheen forming; containing at least 75% readily biodegradable components, with the remainder being non bio-accumulative; and meeting aquatic toxicity EC50 levels of at least 1000mg/l, tested against algae, arthropods and fish.

The BioMarine grease formulations have been assessed according to test methods OECD301B, OECD201, OECD202 and OECD203, and we therefore certify that they are EALs.
