RS Clare was founded in Liverpool in 1748 at the start of the Industrial Revolution. We are the longest-established company manufacturing lubricants in the United Kingdom. Despite our age, our company is innovative, dynamic and constantly pursuing new ways to improve our services and products.
Our long experience in grease making by servicing niche markets for speciality products in Rail, Oil and Gas, and Wire Rope worldwide. Our Private Label Lubricants continues to manufacture lubricants under customers’ own brands.
We have prospered for more than 275 years by adapting our company, products and services to satisfy the evolving needs of our customers best. We have built an enviable reputation, based on our ability to align with the markets we serve, whether supporting major multinational oil companies or local users of speciality lubricants, service treatments or road markings.
In 2023, we celebrated our 275th Anniversary with several initiatives, including a family fun day that took place in Liverpool and saw employees, past and present with their families join in the celebrations as can be seen in the video below.
Chairman's statement
"275 years ago, Richard Clare started his business as a chemist and drysalter by the docks in Liverpool. Over the years, the company has evolved significantly with notable changes, including relocation to Toxteth due to fire risks from turpentine distilling. Today, RS Clare’s house is replaced by modern offices and a state-of-the-art Technical Centre, including the UK’s most up to date Grease Manufacturing plant.
In recent years, my nephew, David Meadows became Managing Director, infusing new energy and growth into the business. As we enter the fourth quarter of the third century since we were founded, our dedicated team at RS Clare remains steadfast in solving customer issues and maintaining our ethical standards, which have ensured our longevity."

In early 2023, RS Clare announced the acquisition of Swiss based railway lubrication solutions provider, Igralub Holding GMBH, together with its subsidiaries in Switzerland, Germany and Austria, and its share of a joint venture in North America. The acquisition is complementary to RS Clare’s existing rail lubrication business and partnerships.
RS Clare is focused on growing its rail business by becoming a friction management solutions provider and increasing our footprint in key markets, such as Europe.
Innovation, Research & Development
Innovation is at the centre of all we do. We have had to innovate to survive, just as we have had to be agile. RS Clare has changed fundamentally ten times in its life so far and is now doing so again. Having several solid legs to a stool is vital if we are to survive. We are developing renewable Ecolabel greases which are safe to all marine life, rail greases which massively extend the life of rail tracks but don’t pollute the ground and valve sealants which protect the integrity of Oil and Gas assets used in the most extreme conditions.
We now have one of the industry’s largest technical teams focused on grease research and development with a combined 215 years’ experience in lubricant chemistry.
