A world-class leader in rail transportation and the only transcontinental railway in North America, with a network spanning >20,000-mile across Canada and Mid-America, connecting three coasts.
The Class 1 rail operator’s Friction Management program had lost focus and drifted over time, resulting in regional discrepancies, poorly functioning lubricants, fluctuating costs and increasing rail replacement. Poor rail curve lubricant performance was identified at the heart of these issues.
The rail operator identified plans to establish a solution with the initial step being the implementation of a 3-year roadmap to improved performance figures:
1. Improved uptime
2. Setting a standard for performance across the network
3. Implement actions to progressively optimize performance
The rail operator established a selection process to test and analyse several high-performing curved rail lubricants, with desired attributes based on cold temperatures pumpability, high-temperature stability, and measured rail wear.
As field trials progressed, given their reduction in rail wear and reduced wayside unit maintenance, only two products produced by RS Clare were selected by the rail operator for continued use:
• ClareTech EcoCurve Heavy Haul
• ClareTech Rail King HL
ClareTech EcoCurve Heavy Haul is the solution for colder locations and environmentally sensitive areas, while ClareTech Rail King HL addresses an alternative Return On Investment (ROI), where extreme performance is less of a demand. However, rail wear and wayside unit management are still a top priority.
