The Southern Area Oil Production Department of Saudi Aramco had identified a candidate well in the Uthmaniyah Field, Well UTMN-69 where the Master Valve had been badly leaking with an average leak rate of 1,300 psi per minute in a fully closed position. Following the observation of the valve and the leak rate, it was decided the best approach for this particular valve was to try using RS Clare’s Valve Sealant 701.
The primary objective of using RS Clare’s Valve Sealant 701 was to completely stop the leakage and maintain zero pressure from the Wellhead Master Valve in UTMN-69.
Representatives from RS Clare, their agent and Saudi Aramco’s Field Services and Greasing Unit departments met to drive to the UTMN-69 well to perform the trial. Once arrived, they first inspected and tested the Master Valve and the leak rate was confirmed as 1,300 psi per minute. 5Kg of Valve Sealant 701 was injected into the cavity of the Master Valve and a pressure test was carried out after the injection. The leakage rate had reduced from 1,300 psi per minute to around 54 psi per minute. This was a huge reduction but the zero leak rate had not yet been achieved.
The Master Valve was then cycled and a further 3 Kg of Valve Sealant 701 was injected. The pressure was bled from the top of the master valve and then monitored through the pressure gauge above the swab valve. There was no build up of pressure from the Master Valve and only a constant static pressure in the line meaning the leak was completely sealed.
After all other attempts to seal the valves had failed, Valve Sealant 701 proved why it is considered by many to be the most effective valve sealant on the market. The Saudi Aramco Engineers were extremely happy with this result and now have Valve Sealant 701 as part of their emergency isolation routine.
