The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is North America’s largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.3 million people in the 5,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, south-eastern New York State, and Connecticut. By far the largest part of MTA’s network is the NYCT subway, which has weekday ridership of some 5.7million passengers.
MTA NYC Transit Department of Subways has a specific track curve lubrication system. The Track Lubrication Department Subdivision operate, maintain, service and repair almost 300 track lubricators. These lubricators contain a pumping system that can push grease up to 2,000ft through steel tubing to apply grease to numerous tracks, up to 10 different locations throughout their curves. This system requires a grease with excellent pumpability, to be temperature stable and not have drastic viscosity changes from Winter to Summer. The grease needs to stay where it has been applied and be spread around the curves with the trains.
Many lubrication manufacturers and supplier have tried to resolve the problems by introducing new lubricants without success due to their unique requirements. Engineers from MTA NYCT worked with RS Clare to design a high-performance track lubricant for their system that would solve the pumpability and multi-season challenges.
RS Clare developed a new ‘0’ NLGI grade grease called EcoCurve High Mobility and it went on trial with MTA NYCT in 2014. After intensive testing and trials for over 2 years, NYCT Engineers could see the improved operational performance and the benefits of the new grease. Its unique design allows the grease to travel under pumping pressure the spreader bar ports to ensure wheel pick up and carry down through the curve, laying a protective film around the curves. Significant benefit of EcoCurve High Mobility is its temperature stable so it works just as well in the Summer and Winter months.
RS Clare have a long history in rail track lubrication, having supplied Network rail and London Underground in UK for roughly 25 years. They have a large technical team who specialise in developing and designing bespoke greases to solve customer’s asset protection issues.
