RS Clare recently held a lunch and learn on Lymphoma, hosted by Lymphoma Action. This was following the success of Tough Mudder, where we raised over £1,000. The session covered the fundamentals of cancer and Lymphoma, including the symptoms, treatments, and critical support services the charity provides, giving our employees valuable insight into Lymphoma.
Tough Mudder may be over, but it’s not too late to contribute. Any donation, big or small, is hugely appreciated: https://www.justgiving.com/page/rsclaretoughmudder26
What is Lymphoma?
Lymphoma is the most common cancer in 15–24 year olds and in the UK. In essence, cancer is when abnormal cells divide uncontrollably; in Lymphoma, the abnormal cells are blood cells.
What is Lymphoma Action?
Lymphoma Action is a UK charity that supports people affected by Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin Lymphoma through helpline support, information resources, peer support groups, and campaigning. This cause is a personal one for our team, after a colleague’s diagnosis with Follicular Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma brought the impact of this condition close to home.
Lymphoma Action has already made a real difference for our colleague, offering support and resources during a difficult time. Every donation helps the charity continue this vital work for others affected by Lymphoma.
What are the different types of Lymphoma?
Lymphoma is not a single disease. The session broke down the two broad categories recognised in clinical practice:
- Hodgkin Lymphoma, identified by the presence of a specific abnormal cell type
- Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, which encompasses a much wider and more varied group of subtypes
What are the early symptoms of Lymphoma?
Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, and swollen lymph nodes. Many of these symptoms are non-specific and can be mistaken for other conditions, so persistent symptoms should be discussed with a doctor.
How is Lymphoma treated?
Treatment depends on the Lymphoma subtype and stage and may include watchful waiting, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, or stem cell transplantation.
