Sheffield Supertram has been serving the city of Sheffield since 1994 and they pride themselves on a clean, quiet and reliable system. The service consists of 48 stations across three lines, connecting with local and national bus and rail services as well as six park and ride sites.
This light rail network were experiencing problems with grease ports blocking. A track engineer contacted RS Clare to discuss our available options for a higher-performance grease that would help to decrease the maintenance time wasted unblocking grease bar ports, and at the same time improve the carry down and most importantly protect the rail.

ClareShield Rail King is the ideal choice for curve rail lubrication where performance is an evenly matched priority alongside price. A trial protocol was agreed and ClareShield Rail King was trialled in a hydraulic lubricator and a mechanical one at carefully chosen sites on the network.
Over the 12 month trial duration, regular track visits were conducted by an RS Clare Technical Sales Manager to support Sheffield Supertram’s track engineers. The trial results were overwhelmingly positive and the issues identified during the trial discussion were mitigated. Carry down was vastly improved compared with the incumbent grease, noise reduction was achieved consistently throughout the trial and maintenance requirements had decreased as expected.
Following the successful trial, Sheffield Supertram initiated full supply of ClareShield Rail King for use in all trackside lubricators.
