Leaking Upper Master Valves, Abu Dhabi Oil Company – Japan
The Abu Dhabi Oil Company (Japan), known as ADOC, is an oil producer contributing to the energy supply to Japan and the development of Abu Dhabi. ADOC’s focus on optimal operations and best practice standards led them to RS Clare when they began to experience problems with leaking valves.
The Problem
A number of Upper Master Valves (UMV) were leaking at one of ADOC’s oil fields and despite attempts to seal the valves the operators struggled to function the valves correctly.RS Clare’s Valve Lubricant 601TM was recommended to the field supervisor by a colleague at another ADOC field.

Our technical sales engineer discussed the issues with the field supervisor and a field trial procedure was agreed for our high-performance Valve Lubricant 601TM.
The Process Agreed:
1. Leakage rate was recorded prior to greasing.
2. Lower Master Valve was closed, and tree bled to zero.
3. Pump 5 litres of RS Clare cleaning solvent in to Upper Master Valve via grease port, cycle valve during solvent injection, soak for 50 mins, cycle valve once more, soak an additional 10 mins.
4. Pump 2BBls of fresh water inhibited w/ KW2648, thus flushing spent solvent and debris to flowline.
5. Inject an average of 5 Lbs of RS Clare Valve Lubricant 601 grease to each of the Cameron 3 1/8” FC cavities.
The Results
Wellheads 1 – 3 trialled Valve Lubricant 601TM and there was a pressure differential across the valves of 1850 psi, 2050 psi, and 1200 psi.
The leakage rate before 601 injection was an average of 2.2 psi/min, 1.0 psi/min and 3 psi/min, compared with leakage rates after 601 was injected averaging 0 psi/min, 0 psi/min and 0.7 psi/min.
Production staff were asked to evaluate the condition of the valves again after a further period of 10 days and with similar pressure differentials, all of the Upper Master Valves bled to zero over. Over an average 40 minute period the UMV’s bled to zero and no leakage rate was recorded.
Customer Feedback
“We were pleased with how quickly 601 stopped the leaking on the valves we trialled and we’re using this in all of our UMV’s to protect the valves from damage and minimise the risk of leaking in the future.”
