Establishing A Barrier For Intervention Work, BP’s Sharjah Asset – UAE

The BP Sharjah UAE asset is a mature gas and condensate producing field. The produced gas and fluids contain small concentrations of H2S, CO2 and chlorides ++. The X-mas trees are a combination of Cameron and Ingram Cactus 5K and 10K Y-blocks. The SI pressures are less than 20% of the equipment ratings.

Over the years a maintenance program was implemented to ensure the X-mas trees were greased on a regular basis (every 6 months) with, “standard grease” as recommended. Issues arose when trying to establish barriers for intervention work as per company policy on the ageing Xmas tree valves.

The Problem

They found that the only way to achieve the required barriers was to have a grease crew grease the Xmas tree valves just prior to performing the intervention (usually the same day) and keep the crew on location in case they were needed. At this point BP made enquires for alternative greases that would not wash out of the valve cavity and help them gain the required barriers.

Valve OEM Cameron recommended they speak to RS Clare and start using Valve Lubricant 601^TM. Valve Lubricant 601^TM is an approved Cameron product and once contacted, RS Clare representatives visited the field to discuss the issues and explain the benefits of using 601.

The Solution

During the ‘grease investigation period’ BP started a CTUBD (Coil Tubing Under Balanced Drilling) program where barriers were required almost on a daily basis. Once they started using Valve Lubricant 601TM they found that they no longer needed to grease the Xmas tree the same day as the rig move, in fact we could grease it two weeks prior and still achieve the required barriers. During CTUBD operations they also no longer had to keep grease and pumping equipment on location and rarely had to grease the Xmas tree during operations.

Due to the excellent performance of Valve Lubricant 601TM, management decided to switch to Valve Lubricant 601TM throughout the field. Huge cost savings have been delivered as a result, and BP continue to use 601 in this field and many more regions across the globe.
