Merseyrail is both a train operating company and a commuter rail network in and around the Liverpool City Region, United Kingdom. Network Rail maintain the lines which you can see in the picture to the right, their total track length is 54km.
Wheel wear and rail wear were a persistent problem for Merseyrail, most significantly along the sensitive ‘loop’ which runs under the city and connects Liverpool’s 4 city centre stations.
Network Rail has also reported more rail wear on the Wirral line where track is very close to the coast and branches off to two of the regions sea-side towns New Brighton and West Kirby.
The curves within the network were an ongoing challenge for lubrication, and some expert advise was sought from RS Clare to discuss the best lubrication plan.
After discussions around the wheel wear issue a trial was agreed for 6 lubricators along the New Brighton (Wirral) line along with 7 lubricators on the sensitive ‘loop’ which runs under the City of Liverpool and connects the 4 main city centre stations.
Once the 12 month field trial concluded the track engineer overseeing the trial reported that they had seen a measurable improvement of wear on the track, and Merseyrail concurred that they had seen a noticeable improvement of wheel wear compared with the data from prior to the Claretech Supreme trial.
Following on from the trials success this Network Rail depot instructed that Claretech Supreme be used in all lubricators within their network coverage.
